Principal Welcome Letter to Families

Dear Denny International Middle School Scholars and Families,

What an honor it is for me to welcome you to a new school year and in-person learning here at Denny International Middle School! Being the principal of Denny is my dream job and I am thrilled to be back for my seventeenth year!

I am very much looking forward to the first day of school and meeting all of our new Scholars and families personally. I am equally excited to see all of our returning Scholars again. The staff and I have been working hard this summer to prepare for the start of school.

All of us at Denny, love middle school! We will be ready to provide a safe and positive learning environment following all SPS and CDC COVID safety protocols. Protocols will include: Everyone wearing a mask and social distancing, among our preventative actions. Additionally, we commit to you that we will:

  • Take care of your child as if they were our own child, socially, emotionally, and academically.
  • Provide a relevant, challenging, and rigorous learning experience for each Scholar.
  • Act with urgency and love towards our shared goals of racial equity, Black Excellence, and educational justice!

Thinking ahead to the first day of middle school or the return to in-person learning can be stressful. Relax and rest assured that we have terrific plans in place that will help make a smooth transition. Our plans include:

Online Family Welcome and Orientation for All Grade Levels

We are so excited to announce our Online Orientation for families on Wednesday, August 25, 2021 at 6:30 pm.

Please join our event: Denny Online Orientation for New Families Link

This will be an opportunity for all families to meet our Administration and Counseling team, learn about our COVID procedures this year, as well as learn more about Denny International Middle School overall. This will be a great opportunity to have any of your questions answered before the start of school year.

In-Person School Tours for 6th and 7th graders

We have planned a way for Scholars to see the inside of our school, while following COVID procedures, before school starts.  Due to current COVID capacity regulations, this event is for Scholars only—families can’t join the tours this time.  If possible, please drop off and pick up your 6th or 7th grader with a mask on at the Denny parking lot according to the following times:

Thursday, August 26

  • Incoming 6th Graders: 5:45 to 6:30 pm
  • Incoming 7th Graders: 7 to 7:45 pm

Staff will be at the parking lot to welcome and guide our Scholars into the building.

Laptops for Our Scholars

As we continue to plan for the fall, we want to make sure everyone has the needed technology. I am very excited to share that we are ready to check out new laptops to every Denny Scholar!  Please join us for one of our new laptop distribution days.  If your Scholar has not returned their device from last year, please bring your current laptop and charger with you on one of the distribution options to exchange for a new one.

Laptop and Supply Distribution Days (please come to one of the options):

  • Monday, Aug. 23, from 12-1:30 p.m. or 5:45-7:30 p.m.
  • Tuesday, Aug. 24, from 12-1:30 p.m. or 5:45-7:30 p.m.

Seattle Public Schools has implemented a $25 technology usage fee to help balance the cost to replenish devices. This will be prepopulated into Scholar’s SchoolPay accounts.  If you participate in our free or reduced lunch program, this fee can be waived.  If you are experiencing any financial hardship regarding the paying the $25 usage fee, please email mewilson@seattleschools.org or call the main office, 206-252-9000.

Each Scholar who receives a school-issued laptop will need to complete and return a signed Parent/Scholar Agreement and the $25 repair and usage fee through SchoolPay. All devices will also be checked out in our Destiny system. If your Scholar has any issues with the device, please notify the school immediately.

Information on SchoolPay and directions on how to pay for the laptop and other items with SchoolPay are attached or linked below.

Reminder that we are asking all families to wear masks and adhere to social distancing procedures while collecting your laptops.  For families that may need assistance, please drive into the Denny parking lot and we will assist you from your car.

Technology forms are attached or linked below and will be available during laptop distribution days.

August Homework

That’s right, homework in August. Fortunately, it is fun—reading! Please read thirty minutes every night—the educational benefit and the enjoyment make the time spent reading rewarding on many levels.

For now, please enjoy the rest of your summer. All of us here at Denny are very much looking forward to seeing you soon. I am confident that with all of us working as a cohesive team, each and every Denny Scholar will excel this year—let’s have an outstanding year together!

Go Dolphins!

Sincerely,

Jeff Clark, Principal
