    I hope you enjoyed Mid-Winter Break!

    A week ago, we mailed home report cards for the 1st semester.  For all of our scholars who made the honor roll, we included a certificate—great job, Dolphins!

    PTSA: Everyone is welcome this Thursday, February 25th, at 7pm for our monthly PTSA meeting. Our guest speaker will present on Mental Health, and specifically how to support others in times of need. We hope you'll join us! Click here to join the meeting

    PTSA: Recipe Exchange Extended! New event date: March 11.

    The PTSA is hosting a Recipe Exchange for our Denny International community! All families are invited to enter a baking or cooking recipe to our recipe exchange! Please email your recipe text, any photos, or even short videos to Mrs. Fields at msfields@seattleschools.org  When you send in a recipe, you will be entered into a raffle for a grocery gift card!  Please include a sentence or two about why this is a special recipe to you and your family. We'll host a live event the evening of March 11th to launch our community recipe collection and even view some live cooking demos!

     

    “Coffee Chat” in Vietnamese: We are pleased to announce an online “coffee chat” in Vietnamese on Thursday, Feb. 25 from 5:00 to 5:30 pm.  “Coffee Chats” are a time to join a Teams meeting for conversation about school, sharing ideas, and questions and answers.

    National African American Parent Involvement Day Thank You! There are so many people doing such incredible things at Denny! This week, the shout-out of appreciation goes to our NAAPID Event Team!     No Amazon Meal Delivery Feb. 22-26: Amazon meal boxes that weekly boxes are not available Feb. 22-26 and will resume the week of March 1. All school meal distribution sites will be open for meal pickup.

    Advisory Callout – College Series: In March, our Advisory Lesson will explore college opportunities for our scholars.  We are excited to focus on Historically Black Colleges and Universities HBCU experiences.  Did YOU attend an HBCU?  Do YOU want to share your experience at an HBCU with Denny Students?     Free Online Enrichment and After-School Programs (OST): As we go into the weekend, I want to inform you that OST Registration is still open!  Register for our Winter OST Programs by clicking on this Registration Form link and if the page asks for a Microsoft login, please login using the scholars SPS account.                 Denny Scholars, you now have a new course on Schoology called Program Support A: Denny OST. This is a new way to receive announcements about OST activities.     OST Program Spotlight

    “Girl’s Room” Wednesdays 3:00pm-5:00pm

    Program will meet once a week for two hours.  Program will provide a safe space to talk and discuss about daily topics, issues middle school girls face day to day, and find ways to empower them.

    "Meet a Scientist" Monday 3:15pm-4:15pm

    Want to meet a scientist?  Register and join our group as we explore the minds of scientists from Molecular Medicine and Mechanisms of Disease PhD program at the University of Washington! The scientists will meet with the scholars and share their scientific journey, how they got interested in science, their path to graduate school, what it's like to be a scientist, and a little bit about their current research.

    "Literacy Leap!" Friday 3:30pm-4:30pm

    City Year Book Club has recently changed their name to "Literacy Leap!" and it will be taking place on Fridays. It is designed to be a fun and safe space to discuss literature and possibly do some creative writing.  Register and join our program as we leap into a world of literature!

    "Get Real" Tuesday 3:30pm-4:30pm

    In Get REAL, youth learn about and discuss healthy friendships and relationships through fun activities, and lesson topic discussions. The program covers topics such as communication skills, peer pressure, friendships, boundaries, dating relationships and the warning signs of dating violence. This is also a great opportunity to connect with peers, high school mentors, and make new friends in a virtual setting. Participants will receive a free t-shirt along with fun items in a goodie bag at the end of the program.

    If you need extra help, in addition to the help being offered by our terrific staff, I recommend taking advantage of the Seattle Public Libraries tutoring described below:

    Seattle Public Libraries is offering free online tutoring: Live tutors are ready to help with remote learning and academic coaching every day from 2 - 10 p.m. Log in with your Library card or Library Link number and PIN to request a tutor. 

    Flu and Well Child Check Appointments are Now Available at Denny with Our Wellness Center!  Please see the attached flyer for details.

    Curbside Library Services: We are now offering library services every Thursday from 11:00 AM – 5:00 PM at the entrance to the Galleria. Scholars can pick up books that they have put on hold using the library catalogue: Destiny. There is also a “grab and go” selection of books to check out on the spot, including a selection of Spanish language books. We love seeing you and supporting your independent reading!

    Denny International Middle School Right Now Needs FundsAt Denny International Middle School, we strive to support all families during any hardship or unexpected circumstances.  We are so delighted to provide basic needs assistance for families through the support of the Alliance for Education Right Now Needs Fund. This fund was created in partnership with Amazon and is stewarded by the Alliance for Education. The fund is designed to directly benefit scholars and does not support currently budgeted items for schools. What can the funds be spent on?  The funds can be spent on addressing the basic needs of scholars. Examples of appropriate expenditures include warm clothing, adequate food, energy assistance, rental assistance or necessary school supplies. Funds cannot be spent on existing school budget expenses.   Right Now, Needs Funds Distribution Procedure: All requests will be reviewed by school administrators and processed when all documentation is received.  All requests must be submitted with a current copy of a bill and to whom the payment should be mailed to. Denny International Middle School has the right to deny any or all request that do not meet the purpose of the fund.  We strive to serve all families with their request, but may be limited based on available funds.

    The SOURCE, a great resource for families and scholars!

    What is the Source? The Source displays attendance, assessment scores and grades.  SchoolPay, Schoology Access Codes and other family resources are also found on the Source.  Please visit www.seattleschools.org/SourceTour to learn more.

    Who can get a Source account? 

    • Parents and guardians of scholars actively enrolled in SPS may set up an account.
    • Scholars actively enrolled in SPS will receive a username and password at school.  Scholars will log onto the Source with their scholar account.  If your scholar did not receive their scholar account, please have them see their school librarian or teacher.

    What do parents and guardians need to set up a Source account?

    • You must be the parent or guardian of a scholar actively enrolled in SPS.
    • Have the same valid email address on record at each scholar's school.  Your email address will be your Source username.
    • Visit the account set up page.
